The US 70 NC Roadtrip
Sept. 16, 2000
Traffic light along US 25/70 in Newport, TN. All of the lights in
downtown Newport (about 10 of them) are numbered, and they are on the same
timer - yes, all 10 turn red at the same time.
US 25 and TN 70? Don't think so. East of Newport, there are 2 or
3 of these; I almost ran off the road taking this one and proceeded not
to take any more. :-)
My favorite pic from the trip. This is US 25/70 east of the NC/TN
border. This also happens to be the background on my computer.
US 70 and US 74A shields at the top of an offramp from I-240 in Asheville.
The Beaucatcher Tunnel, carrying US 70/74A out of downtown Asheville.
I-240 bypasses this tunnel through a deep cut in the mountain about 500
feet to the north.
The volleyball interchange at US 70 and I-240 east of Asheville.
I took a short detour onto NC 80 and NC 226A. Or at least I thought
it was short. What I figured would take 45 minutes or so ended up
taking almost 2 hours. NC 80, all of about 15 miles from US 70 to
the Blue Ridge Pkwy, took me almost an hour. Nothing but switchbacks
and hairpins. This sign, along NC 80, doesn't lie, that's for sure.
One of the few straight sections on NC 226A. This was US 221 for
a bit, until 1934, but it sure wouldn't pass for a US highway today.
