Former West Virginia Route
73 was a two lane predecessor of modern day Interstate's 68 and 79 from
US 50 Bridgeport north through Fairmont through Morgantown and then heading
east to Bruceton Mills and ending at WV Route 26. This route was
killed sometime between 1974 and 1983. Route 73 was demoted to county
route status but held on to the 'Route 73' designation and there are many
signed remnants of the prior designation left along the former corridor.
The route 73 designation would come to life again in the 1990s as a connecting
highway from Logan to US 119 (Corridor G) in Southwest West Virginia.

On US 119 outside of Morgantown, the old route is noted on overhead guide
signs. WV 73 was multiplexed with US 119 through downtown Morgantown
to the point in the photograph above.

In Fairmont, County Route 73/73 notes an old alignment of Route 73.
Many old alignments of Route 73 are signed as such.
