Notes:

Atlantic Ave. is one of Raleigh's stranger roads.  It seems as if it was built in bits and pieces...and, indeed, it was.  The first section to open was the section between Hodges St. and Whitaker Mill Rd., in 1961.  Originally, it ended in a cul-de-sac where the railroad bridge is now.  In the early 70's, the section from New Hope Church almost to Highwoods Blvd. was completed.  The filling in of the gaps occured in what was at that time was Raleigh's largest single road project (it has since been surpassed by I-540) in 1988.  This project, among other things, built the railroad bridge near Atlantic's southern end and required the relocation of Old Wake Forest Rd. near its northern end.  (More info on this at the Wake Forest Rd. page.)  It is now one of Raleigh's busier roads, with long backups occuring each morning at Millbrook and Spring Forest.
