The
Virginia Cutout Collection @
Old Dominion Roads
Once upon a
time, highway shields throughout the United States stood alone without
square or rectangular black backgrounds. Over the past four decades,
various states at varying times began to eliminate these cutout shields.
In many states in the union, all of them, unless you visit a local antique
store, have been removed from the road landscape. However, in the
Commonwealth of Virginia, in many small towns and in larger urban settings,
these shields remain. This page documents these signs and challenges
you, the web citizen, to join this photo scavenger hunt and including your
photos in this collection. The rules are simple: See a cutout, take
a photo, try to get a close up, and e-mail it to aprince27@gmail.com,
and I'll put them up!
