The National Road: Yough River Crossing to Uniontown

One of the many historical markers along US 40 that briefly describes the road's history. Photo taken by Barb and John Bee.

Route 40 from the Yough River Crossing to the city of Uniontown is an eclectic mix of Colonial American history, recreation, and modern architecture.  Nemacolin Woodlands is a fine mountain resort and health spa.  Located on US 40 in Farmington, it is home to golf courses, polo fields, rock climbing, and a world-class luxury hotel.

A turn North onto PA 381 leads to some great day trip sites.  The town of Ohiopyle is home to Ohiopyle State Park and an excellent opportunity to do some whitewater rafting, hiking, and fishing.  Further up the road is the famed Fallingwater.  The Edgar J. Kaufmann home designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright.  Public tours are available.

American Colonial War history is literally on the National Road.  Fort Necessity National Battlefield and Braddock's Grave are located right off the highway.  Also, many historic taverns dot the route.  As you approach Uniontown, a short trip off the beaten path at Summit Mountain directs you to Laurel Caverns.
