In November 2004, the Pennsylvania Department
of Transportation truncated State Route 970, moving the southern terminus
of the highway from PA 350 in Sandy Ridge to US 322 in Woodland.
The cutback of nearly 20 miles of state primary highway shortened Route
970 to a length of five miles. At right is the 2000 routing of PA
970, two years later PA 970 was moved
onto US 322 from Woodland to Wallaceton. PA 970 was extended
from Woodland to Sandy Ridge in 1946.
The truncation also eliminated a brief multiplex with PA 53 through the town of Osceola Mills. Within Centre County, the former designation of PA 970 is now SR 3049. Below, courtesy of Jonathan Pyrich, are photos from the former alignment of PA 970 through Osceola Mills and around US 322 in Clearfield County. |
At the current southern terminus of PA 970 in Woodland sits a set of signs which includes a gap from where a South PA 970 shield once went. Prior to 2002, PA 970 would head straight. From 2002-04, PA 970 would turn left and follow US 322 East to Wallaceton. (Photo taken by Jonathan Pyrich).
Just outside of Wallaceton is where PA 970 would leave US 322 to head to Osceola Mills. This photo is from US 322 West; PA 970 South would be a left hand turn here and PA 970 North would continue along US 322 West. (Photo taken by Jonathan Pyrich).

In Osceola Mills, where Route 970 once multiplexed with PA 53, there are numerous signs with blanks leftover from the removed PA 970 shields. In this shot, the South PA 53 shield once stood next to a PA 970 North shield. (Photo taken by Jonathan Pyrich).

Approaching the former terminus of PA 970 South. Formerly, there was once an 'END' PA 970 sign to go along with the 'JCT' 350 sign. To view more of the former southern terminus of PA 970 in Sandy Ridge, please go here. |
