Carolina Lost: Graham Elementary School Pedestrian Bridge - Shelby
What: Graham Elementary School Pedestrian Bridge over US 74
Where: Shelby

Along Highway 74 on the western edges of Shelby, an old weathered concrete pedestrian bridge crosses over the four lane highway.  How many times have you wondered what the bridge connected to, and if it is still used?  Well the bridge is still in use and it connects to Graham Elementary, a local neighborhood school.  As for the age of the bridge, that is unknown.  It is an NCDOT bridge but the local office does not have any details about the bridge. (1)  What we do know is that a US 74 bypass of Shelby was completed around 1952 , and that it was widened later in that decade.  The design of the bridge is consistent with styles of that era.

Looking East along US 74.  Shelby is straight ahead, Graham Elementary is on the left. Approach- ing the bridge from the neighbor- hood. The tunnel like walk of the bridge.
A view of the bridge's landing from the school's grounds. The underbelly of the concrete structure.
