1955 Missouri State Map Slide Show
Take a trip back to when Missouri, like the rest of the country, was near the dawn of the Interstate Era.  Thanks to Rich Piehl, you can check out views of Missouri's highway system that were found on the back of the state's official 1955 highway map.  The Interstate Highway Act would be passed one year later, and Missouri's highways would forever be different.  On August 2, 1956, Missouri awarded contracts for two projects that would eventually become part of the Interstate Highway System.  One for US 66 (I-44) in Laclede County and the other for US 40 (I-70) in St. Louis.  Eleven days later on August 13th, the first work on Interstate Highways with in the county began on both jobs.

The twelve photo slide show includes original descriptions of the photo found on the map, and where possible, the modern day status of that photo.  For the best viewing experience please hit the F11 key on your keyboard for a full screen display.
