Vintage Indiana Road Photos ---Highway Photos Taken before the Internet Explosion

Since about the mid-1990s the Internet has been the catalyst in the explosion of road related photography and websites throughout the United States. Vintage Ohio Road Photos showcases road photography done before 1995, when the Internet boom began. It is a great way to look at roads and times of past before gribblenation, before aaroads, and the Internet. 1980-1989

	'Welcome to Indiana' sign posted at Ohio/Indiana State Line; near Richmond. Photo taken by Michael Summa; 1986. This sign was located on OH 121 as it crosses into Indiana and becomes IN 121. After Governor Orr's years as governor, the state no longer put the name of the current standing governor with welcome signs.

	Overheads for I-90/Indiana Toll Road and I-80/94/ US 6 (Exit 259) on I-65 North; Gary. Photo taken by Michael Summa; 1986. Recent improvements to this interchange has elimnated these signs. Also, the states names of Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois have been replaced by Detroit, Toledo, and Chicago. Compare the button-copy overheads with this photo of the modern reflectorized signs.

1970-79

	Button-copy overheads for US 31 South (Exit 4), IN 37 South (Exit 2B), and US 31/IN 27 North (Exit 2A) on I-74/465; Indianapolis. Photo taken by Michael Summa; 1979. At the time, both US 31 and IN 37 were routed inside the Indianapoilis Beltway. Today, both are routes on the circumfrential freeway around the city. Here is a look at the same interchange today. Not only are new signs in place, the control cities for each exit have been removed.

	Shields for the Illinois Tollway; I-80/94 West and US 6/41 West; Highland. Photo taken by Michael Summa; 1976. I'm guessing that the US 41 West is an error as US 41 only goes about a mile west before returning to a Northward journey. Here is a look at the interchange today, with correct notation of US 41 North.

In 1954, US 231 was extened into Indiana over existing highways. Many of the routes that US 231 took over from were not decommissioned until the 1970s. (1,2)
	Guide sign for I-69 and US 27 (Exit 12) on the Indiana Toll Road; Jamestown. Photo taken by Michael Summa; 1976. A few things have changed since this photo was taken. First, exits on the Indiana Toll Road are now mileage based making this interchange Exit 144. Finally, in 2002 US 27 was truncated back to Fort Wayne, removing it from this stretch of I-69.
